About the Medicine

Desonide

Indications

Desonide is a mild corticosteroid applied to the skin. Because it is gentle, it is often chosen for sensitive areas and for children when a doctor advises. It is used to relieve redness, itching and swelling in:

  • Eczema and atopic dermatitis
  • Contact dermatitis and allergic skin rashes
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis (red, flaky skin on the face or scalp)
  • Other mild inflammatory skin conditions

How It Works

Desonide reduces the release of substances in the skin that cause inflammation and itching. It also narrows small blood vessels, so redness and swelling settle.

Dosage and Administration

Adults and children: apply a thin layer to the affected skin 2 or 3 times a day and rub in gently, or as directed by your doctor. Wash hands after use. Do not cover with tight dressings or, in babies, tight nappies unless told to. Stop once the skin has cleared, and see a doctor if there is no improvement within 2 weeks (4 weeks at most without review).

Interactions

Interactions are unlikely because very little is absorbed. Avoid using other steroid or irritating skin products on the same area at the same time unless advised.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to desonide or any ingredient
  • Untreated bacterial, fungal or viral skin infections
  • Acne, rosacea or perioral dermatitis (rash around the mouth)

Side Effects

Mild burning, stinging, itching, dryness or irritation may occur at the site. Long-term use can cause skin thinning, stretch marks, small visible blood vessels and changes in skin colour, though this is less likely than with stronger steroids.

Get urgent medical help for signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing, or if the skin becomes hot, painful, swollen or oozes pus.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use during pregnancy only if a doctor advises, on small areas for a short time. If breastfeeding, do not apply to the breasts.

Precautions and Warnings

  • For skin use only; keep away from the eyes and mouth.
  • Children can absorb more through the skin; use the smallest amount for the shortest time.
  • Avoid long-term use on the face, groin and armpits unless prescribed.
  • Tell your doctor if the rash spreads or looks infected.

Overdose

Overuse on the skin for long periods can cause the side effects above. If swallowed, contact a doctor or poison centre.

Therapeutic Class

Topical corticosteroid (mild, low potency).
