About the Medicine

Neem

Indications

Neem (Azadirachta indica) is a tree whose leaves, bark, seed oil and extracts are widely used in traditional medicine and in skin, hair and oral-care products. Neem preparations are traditionally used for:

  • Acne, pimples and oily skin (creams, face washes, capsules)
  • Itchy skin, minor skin infections and dandruff
  • Gum and dental care (toothpastes, mouthwashes)
  • As a natural insect repellent and for head lice (oil-based products)

Scientific evidence is limited. Neem does not cure skin infections, scabies or other diseases that need proper treatment.

How It Works

Neem contains bitter plant compounds such as nimbidin, nimbin and azadirachtin. In laboratory studies these show antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory activity, which may help calm inflamed skin and reduce germs on the skin and in the mouth. Azadirachtin also repels and harms insects.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. For skin and hair products, apply to the affected area as directed and rinse where the label says so. Capsules or tablets taken by mouth should be used only for short periods at the label dose. Neem oil must never be taken by mouth and must never be given to babies or young children.

Interactions

When taken by mouth, neem may lower blood sugar and add to the effect of diabetes medicines such as Insulin and Metformin. It may affect the immune system, so ask a doctor if you take immune-suppressing medicines such as Cyclosporine or Tacrolimus, or after an organ transplant. No important interactions are expected with brief use on the skin.

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy, or trying to conceive (neem taken by mouth may affect fertility and pregnancy)
  • Babies and young children (neem oil by mouth can cause serious poisoning)
  • Known allergy to neem
  • Autoimmune disease or organ transplant, for products taken by mouth, unless a doctor agrees

Side Effects

On the skin: possible irritation, redness, itching or allergic rash. By mouth: stomach upset, nausea and, with high or long-term use, possible liver or kidney problems and low blood sugar.

Get urgent medical help if a child swallows neem oil, or if anyone has vomiting, drowsiness, fits, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or signs of allergy such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not take neem by mouth during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Avoid during breastfeeding as safety is not established. Brief use of cosmetic products on small areas of skin is less of a concern, but check with your doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Do a patch test on a small area of skin before first use.
  • Keep products away from the eyes.
  • See a doctor if acne is severe or scarring, if a skin infection spreads or comes with fever, or if itching affects several family members (possible scabies).
  • Do not use oral products for long periods.

Overdose

Swallowing neem oil, especially by children, can cause vomiting, drowsiness, fits, and liver and brain damage. Seek emergency medical help straight away and take the pack with you.
