About the Medicine

Bilberry Fruit [Vaccinium Myrtillus L]

Indications

Bilberry fruit (Vaccinium myrtillus) is a small dark-blue berry related to the blueberry. Its extract is used in eye-health supplements. It is traditionally used to support eye health and night vision, to help with tired eyes, and to support small blood vessels, for example in diabetic eye problems and varicose veins. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited and mixed.

How It Works

Bilberry is rich in anthocyanosides, plant pigments that act as antioxidants. They may help protect the cells of the retina (the light-sensing layer at the back of the eye) and strengthen the walls of small blood vessels.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label. Standardised extracts are usually taken once or twice a day with food.

Interactions

Bilberry extract may have a mild blood-thinning effect and may lower blood sugar slightly. Take care and ask a doctor if you take Warfarin, Clopidogrel, Aspirin or medicines for diabetes such as Metformin or Insulin.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to bilberry or other berries in the same family.
  • Bleeding disorders, unless a doctor agrees.

Side Effects

Bilberry fruit is usually well tolerated. Occasionally it may cause mild stomach upset, nausea or skin rash.

Get urgent medical help if you notice sudden loss or blurring of vision, eye pain, unusual bleeding or bruising, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Bilberries eaten as food are considered safe. There is not enough information on concentrated extracts in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so use them only after advice from a doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Supplements do not treat cataract, glaucoma, macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy. Have regular eye checks, especially if you have diabetes.
  • Stop about 2 weeks before planned surgery.
  • Bilberry leaf is different from the fruit and should not be used long term.

Overdose

Large amounts of extract may cause stomach upset. Contact a doctor if a large amount has been taken or a child has swallowed it.

Therapeutic Class

Herbal supplement (eye health, antioxidant).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
