About the Medicine

Tart Cherry

Indications

Tart cherry (sour cherry, Prunus cerasus) extract is a fruit-based supplement. It is used to:

  • Help ease joint pain and stiffness, including in osteoarthritis
  • Support people with gout, as some studies suggest it may help lower uric acid and reduce flare-ups
  • Help muscles recover after hard exercise
  • Support sleep, as tart cherries naturally contain a little melatonin

Evidence is promising but limited. It does not replace gout or arthritis medicines prescribed by your doctor.

How It Works

Tart cherries are rich in deep red plant pigments called anthocyanins and other polyphenols. These act as antioxidants and are thought to reduce inflammation by lowering the activity of enzymes and chemicals that cause pain and swelling. Some studies suggest tart cherry may also help the kidneys remove uric acid, the substance that forms crystals in gout.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label, usually once or twice daily with water, with or without food. Benefits for joints may take several weeks. Not recommended for children unless a doctor advises it.

Interactions

No serious interactions are well documented. Because of its antioxidant and possible mild blood-thinning effects, ask your doctor before use if you take Warfarin or other blood thinners. Keep taking gout medicines such as Allopurinol or Colchicine as prescribed; tart cherry is not a substitute.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to cherries or other fruits of the rose family (such as plums, peaches or apricots)

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Possible side effects include:

  • Stomach upset, wind or loose stools
  • Mild allergic reactions such as itching or rash

Get urgent medical help if you have swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing after taking it. During a gout attack, see a doctor if the joint is very hot and swollen and you have a fever, as this can be an infection.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Eating cherries as food is safe. There is not enough information on concentrated extracts during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so ask your doctor before use.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Juice-based products may contain a lot of sugar; people with diabetes should check the label.
  • Do not stop prescribed gout or arthritis medicines without your doctor's advice.
  • See a doctor if joint pain is severe, getting worse, or comes with fever.

Overdose

Taking too much may cause diarrhoea and stomach cramps. Return to the usual dose and seek medical advice if symptoms are severe.
